Artificial intelligence (AI), a powerful technology, is widely accepted with enthusiasm over the potential applications and apprehension over the possible loss of the human element in the art and science of medicine.

The subfields of AI are machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL) with artificial neural networks (ANN), natural language processing (NLP), and computer vision, similar to the different subfields of medicine (CV).

Due to its reliance on imaging and computer vision, which enables computers to "see" and understand visual data, the field of endoscopy in gastroenterology has attracted the most interest in AI. AI is increasingly used in clinical settings to evaluate illness risk, accurately diagnose patients, and create treatment plans.

The development of data sets combined with AI for endoscopic diagnostics is poised to make a quantum leap in training, lesion detection, or lesion distinction thanks to the sophisticated imaging modalities currently accessible (i.e., benign or malignant). Early cancer diagnosis in the oesophagus and stomach, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), capsule endoscopy, colon polyp detection and characterization, and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) have been the most promising applications of AI in endoscopy. This ultimately results in a better treatment strategy and enhances patient outcomes. In other parts of the world, the real-time usage of systems like GI Genius and ENDOANGEL has increased the diagnosis of colonic polyps.

Dr. Mohit P. Shetti, Consultant - Medical Gastroenterology, Therapeutic & Bariatric Endoscopy, Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, said that the application of AI in routine GI endoscopy practice is now being studied, and the preliminary findings are promising.
